JACK VETTRIANO
1951-
Do you know who Jack Hoggan
is?
Born in Kirkcaldy (Fife) into a Scots-Italian family he left school at 16 to
work in the Fife coalfields. A girl friend gave him a set of
watercolor paints for his 12st birthday and he taught himself to paint. In 1989 his
work was shown at the Royal Scottish Academy and he changed his name to Vettriano - his mothers maiden name.
Vettriano has become Scotland's most
commercially successful artist, receiving an OBE for services to the visual arts
in 2003 and an honorary degree from St Andrew's University.
His Singing Butler - an image of a couple dancing on a windswept beach while a
butler sings to them is Britain's most popular art poster, outselling Monet and
Van Gogh.

Auctioned at Sotherby's in April 2004 it smashed all expectations by
selling for 744,800 pounds - a record price for a Scottish painting and for a sale held in
Scotland, despite him being loathed by art critics!
Originally sold by Vettriano for 3000 pounds it earns him £250,000 a year
in reproduction royalties - this painting has sold more than 1 million print
copies, countless greeting cards plus mugs!
Aside
from his exhibitions, Vettriano has acquired a vast following through the
licensing and distribution of his images. To date, more than 3 million posters
and cards featuring Vettriano's paintings have sold worldwide.
Selling his first paintings in
1988, they are now owned by many notable people including Jack Nicholson and Sir
Terence Conran, however no British gallery has ever purchased a Vettriano.
