Born
on 30 March 1855 Vincent was poor and often hungry and ill throughout
his life. His first masterpiece the Potato Eaters illustrated
peasant poverty.
He developed his own individual style of brushwork
and colorful palette, and was a pioneer of Expressionism, using color for its emotive appeal, and profoundly influenced the Fauves
and other experimenters of 20th century art.
The
Museum in Amsterdam is especially devoted to his work and run
