Born
in Wisconsin he had lessons in watercolor and oil at the Art Institute
of Chicago. He worked as a letterer, fashion designer, illustrator.
In 1922 he discovered cubism, saw japanese prints and learnt chinese
brushwork. Later an interest in Persian and Arabic Scripts, meeting
Aldous Huxley, Pearl Buck, living in a Zen monastery in Kyoto
studying painting, calligraphy, japanese poetry and meditation.
