Sargent was
the foremost American portrait painter of the late 19th
century, born in Florence he travelled extensively in Europe,
studying art in Florence at the Accademia delle Belle Arts and
in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. In 1875 he sketched in Barbizon
and then joined the bohemian English colony in Grez. In 1877 he
assisted Carolus-Duran with a large ceiling decoration for the
Louvre, in the late 1870's he sketched in Italy and North Africa,
then studied with Velazquez. His visits to Venice in the early
1880's brought him into contact with Whistler and Duveneck, he
then settled in London travelling to America to execute portrait
commissions, and also became involved with mural decorations for
the Boston Public Library. Sargent achieved success as a portraitist
and was elected an associate of the Royal Academy. He devoted
his later years to landscape and mural painting.
