Poynter was born in Paris in 1836.   He studied at Westminster and Ipswich, then Rome and Paris.  His positions included Professor at University College London, Director of the National Gallery and President of the Royal Academy.  In 1869 he designed the cartoons for a mosaic of St George in the Houses of Parliament
