CLAUDE MONET
Monet was a central figure in Impressionism.
Born in Paris, his father was a successful grocer with a seaside property at Saint-Adresse near Le Havre. In 1871 he moved to Agenteuil, and in 1883 settled at Giverny. He painted a series of paintings of the same subject at different times, being fascinated with the constant variation of light on the same subject.
Settled in Giverny, his house and garden became the focus of his work. He established flower gardens, built bridges and ponds with water lilies which became the subject of many of his paintings until his death in 1926
In 1874 his painting Impression, Sunrise astounded the Art Critic Louis Leroy who remarked with scorn:
"perhaps since I was "impressed" there must be some "impression" in it."
