EDWARD HOPPER
1882-1967
"If you could say it in words there would be no reason to paint."
Artists in Art 1947
Hopper was America's most important 20th century
Realist painter. Born and raised in Nyack on the Hudson River
in New York state, Hopper pursued a career in commercial illustration
rather than fine art painting. He studied at the New York School
of Art an travelled in Europe between 1906-10. His approach to
art was severe and contradicted current trends in European painting.
By 1930 he was recognised as one of the major American Realist
painters.
