El Greco
1541-1614
Born in Crete he lived in Rome, Venice and finally Toledo in Spain. Here was given the name 'El Greco' the Greek rather than his real name of Domenikos Theotocopoulos. His early art was Byzantine but he then became absorbed in the Mannerist style. travBotticelli was one of the greatest artists of the late 15th century. He painted portraits as well as religious, political and mythological works, going to Rome in 14 81 to paint part of the Sistine Chapel.
