Born
in New York he left high school and enrolled in evening classes
studying under John Sloan and Robert Henri. In 1921 he went to
Paris and attended sketch classes at the Academie de la Grande
Chaumiere, Paris, and visited Munich and Berlin. On returning
to New York he entered the Parsons School of Design and was exhibiting
by 1929. He exhibited annually with The Ten, a group he founded
with Mark Rothko.
