Sam Francis
1923-

Born in California, he studied medicine and spsychology at the University of California, Berkeley. Whilst in the US Air Corps he began to paint, studied art history, and later received an MA in 1950. He studied under David Parks, was influenced by Clyfford Still and Mark Rothko and joined a colony of American painters in Paris in 1950 which centered around Canadian artist Jean-Paul Riopelle.
