Caillebotte came from a wealthy family and supported many of the impressionists, financing exhibitions and buying many paintings himself. His early work shows affinity with that of Manet and Degas, and until the 1880's his paintings were of street scenes, portraits, and working class life. In 1882 he retired and painted only landscapes and still life.
